Jaunt up the hill

May 21, 2009

Was feeling pretty sluggish this afternoon, so decided to take my workout outside for some extra energy. Took a little run up a local trail that is only about 3 miles from the house. We live in a town that has a large rock on the hill in the center, and there is a nice little trail that goes up to the top. If you go up the trail, around the rock, and back down, its about 1.4 miles I believe. The climb takes you from 6220 ft above sea level to 6590 ft. Some of the trail is steps or large boulders, so you have to pay attention especially if you are trail running. Not bad for an evening little jog close to home (although I have to drive there still).

I would like to get where I can 100% run up it, run around the top, and back down without stopping. I can always run around the rock at the top a couple extra times to increase the distance later. There are some other trails (not as challenging, but still nice) a bit farther from home I can work on later.

It was nice to get out of the house tonight for a change. My strength is coming back after my Red Rocks excursion, although my lungs did give me some fits and I did a good deal of walking on the up slope.

I returned home, did some upper body strength training, and then followed it up with about 15 minutes of deep stretching.

Here are some pics I took up there last year when we walked up and I had the camera with me.

This is from the top looking west over part of the small city we live in.

This is looking more northwest, can see the foothills and the mountains in layers.

The setting sun always looks great around here. Love it.
