Gentle Red Colored Nudges

May 21, 2010

So I have been wanting a bird feeder for the yard for quite awhile. I want to see the birds outside my window chirping and doing birdie things, and I want my crazy cats to bonk their heads on the glass when they go barreling towards them. Its a simple vision really.

I have held off from getting said bird feeder though because frankly, I am not in the mood for the gigantic mess bird feeders make, I already have enough things I avoid cleaning as it is. Or the squirrels it would attract that cause one of my husbands dogs to lose whats left of his aging mind.

So I had the BRILLIANT idea that I would instead get a hummingbird feeder. No squirrels, no dogs freaking out, but still seizuring cats and cute things to watch out the window. Sounds like a problem solved to me!!

I toddled over to the local big box hardware store, located the hummingbird feeders (on a shelf 10 feet off the ground of course)……located a handy step ladder with 5 million warnings posted on it……wheeled it over (which I think violated about 4.9 million of those warnings), fetched me a new feeder and a box of hummingbird kool aid.

I located a spot on the porch outside a window where I could sit and work and watch out for the spastic birds to show up. I managed to install a hook in the overhang even though it required the use of a drill and a bit of brute strength….but the kicker, I actually managed to PUT the drill and supplies AWAY!! My husband will be so proud.

I filled my feeder up with nuclear colored water, hung it outside my window, and sat.

I have been sitting here for 3 days now and have not seen a single hummingbird (I know they are around…..I might be clueless sometimes but I did not hang up a feeder for non existent creatures). Fine, I get it, I need to go somewhere for them to actually show up. So I left my bird watching post and went shopping for two hours.

When I returned, the wind had kicked up to like 300 mph and my hair was a disaster but I actually had clothes, so all was right with the world. I glanced out the window upon my return only to see that 3/4 of the radioactive water was gone. Hrmmm, yes, I was pretty sure it was full when I left. This is not a good sign seeing as I have never noticed a 200lb hummingbird with a glandular problem wandering the neighborhood.

Don’t you love when the Universe reminds you that you have things to get done? I have been putting off powerwashing the deck, back of the house, and cleaning the outside windows for weeks now. I have a valid excuse…..I would prefer the temperature be over 65 degrees before I start flinging water around…call me crazy….housecleaning should not involve dry suits.

So, thank you Universe. Thank you for reminding me of what I should do this weekend now that it is warm. Appreciate it…

Can you remind me next time when it does NOT include spreading sticky red dye all over the side of my house, windows, railings, and deck? Pretty please? K….thanks!
